Originally Kazimierz was a separate town, founded in 1335 by King Casimir the Great and named after him, on an island in the Vistula River. Today the river is no longer there, and Kazimierz was swallowed up into Krakow in 1800. It was in 1495 that Krakow's Jewish population was forced to relocate to Kazimierz and they settled in the eastern part of the district. For hundreds of year, Kazimierz was a multicultural area where Jew and Christian co-existed peacefully. Kazimierz has undergone a renaissance, making it one of Krakow's premier locations, with many bars, cafes and galleries; it is also the main party zone in Krakow.
