We tread softly, conscious that man has been here for only a brief moment. For it was 185 million years ago, driven by powerful currents in the earths mantle, that the ancient continent of Gondwana started to break apart. Eventually a massive lifeboat was cast adrift carrying a precious cargo of unique plants and animals. This is Australia and it is still drifting Northwards at the great speed of 60 kilometres every million years. Unlike Gondwana, most of Australia has become dry and arid. There is this small area near Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, where today you will find the remnant rainforests of Gondwana. Thala Beach Lodge is located on the northernmost headland of a 2km stretch of untouched coastline. The views from our restaurant are panoramic, taking in the Far North Queensland coast from Double Island to Cape Tribulation, and from the sparkling waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the World Heritage Forests that cover our coastal ranges. Your room is nestled among the naturally existing Eucalypt forest, which has been preserved carefully during construction. We have a wide range of forest types, which provide habitats for some extraordinary Birds, Plants and animals. All buildings are up in the tree canopy, providing a magical and unobtrusive relationship with the natural world surrounding them. Thala is located 10 minutes, by regular shuttle, from Port Douglas. All tours in the Cairns, Port Douglas area pick up at the Lodge. All local specialist tours can be arranged for you after arrival. Secluded among the gardens is the "Rock Pool" a smaller and more intimate swimming pool for guests looking for a quiet grove in which to relax. Thala is an area exceptionally rich in habitat diversity, making it one of the best places on the coast for bird watching. We also have a wonderful variety of Queensland's Tropical Butterflies.Thala's gardens are a thriving habitat for many of our local small marsupials, amphibians, and smaller reptiles.
